About Mayesbrook Lake

Mayesbrook Lake Outdoor Centre, offers watersports activities to local people and is owned by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and run by the Department of Education Arts and Libraries. There are two main functions of the centre, the first being to run the schools watersports programme and the second to provide out of school hours learning opportunities for young people and the wider community.

Every year the centre sees over 2,000 pupils as part of the schools programme. This programme operates five days a week from late February through to early December. A typical introductory course of five two-hour sessions will see pupils learning to sail Oppie or Topper dinghies to the National Schools Sailing Association Bronze Award standard. They will also have a taster session of a paddlesport activity, either Bell Boating, Canadian Canoeing or Kayaking. Pupils returning for a second week can progress to their NSSA Silver Award, or take the option of a course of paddlesport activities, following the British Canoe Union Paddlepower scheme.

The Outdoor Adventure Club is the forum through which the out of hours learning takes place at the lake. Most young people join after the enjoyment of their initial experience at the lake with their school visit, however young people are able to join the club regardless of whether they have come down with their school or not. Information on the club is linked to the PE page of the pupils and teachers sections on the schools intranet.

All participants are expected to assist with putting equipment away after use as well as getting it out!

If you are keen to gain some of the NSSA awards whilst at the centre there are no charges for attempting any of the awards that the centre offers, but there may be a small charge for badges and certificates gained. A small charge is made for Paddlepower log books and stickers. Please ask your instructor for details.
